Abstract: String theory is a framework that holds the promise of beinga consistent theory of quantum theory. It invokes supersymmetry at a fundamentallevel and requires space-time to be ten-dimensional. This poses the question of how our four-dimensional world emerges in this framework.

In a multifaceted manner, the basic physical and mathematical concepts of such four-dimensionalstring compactifications  are presented. Special emphasis is given to topics of recent interest like the emergence of a  string landscape and proposed conjectures pointing towards no-go theorems for UV complete quantum gravity derived effective actions. Their application to string theoretic realizations of inflation or quintessence are discussed.
